Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) Researchers state the base cause and treatments relate to the immune system. I could not find reputable scientific research for herbal treatments so I have included some from alternative sources. When I find better sources I will add them to this site. For now realize that this disease is related to or causes mono and seems to be caused by or related to the immune system, liver and Metallothionein which is related to metal toxicity. Study these links and they will provide additional treatment and related disease information.

It is a virus and antibiotics will not treat it but will further weaken the immune system thus may cause it to get worse.

1. "Background. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-related smooth muscle neoplasms (SMNs) have been associated with immune dysregulation, most notably in patients who have undergone solid organ transplantation or in patients with HIV/AIDS. Objective. to report our experience with EBV-related neoplasms as well as describing the first EBV-related SMN in the setting of administration of glucocorticoids (hormone) and the tumor necrosis factor inhibitor etanercept. Design. We have case reports, of minimum 3-year follow-up, 2002-2005. Setting. It was held in an academic and tertiary referral cancer center. Patients. Patients are with dysregulated immunity after solid organ transplantation, HIV/AIDS, or with psoriasis after treatment with etanercept. Interventions. There were discontinuation of etanercept, right hepatic (liver) trisegmentectomy, and chemotherapy. Measurements. We use survival as a measurement here. Results. Patients who were able to withstand reduction in immunosuppression survived. Surgical resection or chemotherapy was successful in delaying progression of disease. Limitations. There was a relatively short follow-up for these slow-growing neoplasms. Conclusion. EBV-related SMNs have variable aggressiveness. While chemotherapy may slow disease progression, resection and improving the host immune status provide the best opportunity for primary tumor control." 2. "The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) can cause many different infections in humans, including mononucleosis (also called mono or the kissing disease). Many EBV infections produce mild symptoms that are similar to the common cold. However, individuals who develop mono may experience more serious symptoms, such as extreme fatigue, sore throat, enlarged lymph nodes, fever, headache, swollen tonsils, loss of appetite, soft and swollen spleen, and night sweats. EBV infections in adolescents and young adults typically cause mono.EBV, a member of the" (2)

3. "Cranberry:..Limited laboratory research has examined the antiviral activity of cranberry. These antiviral properties may help the body fight against viruses, such as the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). However, there are no reliable human studies supporting the use of cranberry in this area. Additional research is warranted." (3)
4. "Licorice:...It has been proposed that licorice may help treat infections with the Epstein-Barr virus. However, studies have not been performed to determine if this therapy is safe and effective in humans." (4) See our page on liquorice

5. "chrysanthemum may help the body fight against the Epstein-Barr virus. However, this cannot be verified until well-designed human trials are performed." (5)

5. "7 Common Mistakes People Make When Recovering From Epstein Barr Virus" (6) This article contains a lot of useful information and treatment options. Check this site regarding the various herbs and minerals as we have collected important information for some of them such as selenium has three types and only one type is best for humans.

6. "Epstein-Barr virus is in the herpes family of viruses and most people will become infected with EBV sometimes during their lives. In the United States, as many as 95 percent of adults between 35 and 40 years of age have been infected. Infants become susceptible to EBV as soon as maternal protection present at birth disappears."
